Dr. Gourab Sil is currently serving as a Head of the Department and Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Indore. He earned his Ph.D. in Transportation Systems Engineering from IIT Bombay in 2019, following his M.Tech. from IIT Bhubaneswar. Prior to joining IIT Indore, he held academic and research positions, including Visiting Faculty at BITS Pilani and Research Associate at IIT Bombay. Dr. Sil’s academic and professional journey reflects a deep commitment to transportation systems engineering, particularly in the domains of geometric highway design, roadway safety, and driver behavior analysis.
His research is grounded in both empirical field investigations and advanced modeling techniques. He specializes in performance-based geometric design of highways, road safety analysis, traffic engineering, and the application of statistical and reliability methods to evaluate transportation infrastructure. His work often involves technologies such as GPS, GIS, LiDAR, and inertial measurement systems (IMUs) to extract and analyze roadway geometry and traffic behavior data.
Dr. Sil leads the Traffic Engineering and Transportation Safety Laboratory at IIT Indore, where he mentors undergraduate and doctoral students on a range of projects related to highway geometric design, safety analysis influenced by road geometry, speed prediction modeling, driver behavior studies, motorized two-wheeler behavior analysis, and applications of intelligent transportation systems. His scholarly contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed publications in reputed journals like the Journal of Transportation Engineering – ASCE and Transportation Letters. His studies have offered significant insights into speed- based safety evaluations, driver perception of curves, and consistency in highway design.
He has garnered more than 300 citations for his research and holds an H-index of around 8, indicating strong influence in the field of highway engineering and traffic safety. Beyond academia, Dr. Sil actively collaborates with industry professionals and government stakeholders, contributing to the development of safer, data-driven roadway infrastructure policies and practices. Through his teaching, research, and leadership, Dr. Gourab Sil continues to make meaningful advancements in the field of transportation engineering, with a focus on improving safety and efficiency on Indian roads.
